Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was raised by her mother, grandparents and godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young teenager. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford then applied for a place in the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. Her regular work in theatre led her to join the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 Season. Tate's stand-up comedy style that she started adding to her show in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
